British comedy actor Rowan Atkinson, known for his role of Mr. Bean, is selling his 1998 McLaren F1 supercar for the price of £8 million (~ $12 million).
Many of you know Rowan Atkinson for his roles of Mr. Bean, Black Adder and Johnny English, but not everybody knows that he is a passionate car enthusiast. He owned many sports cars such as a Honda NSX, Audi A8, Honda Civic Hybrid, Ford Falcon Sprint, Jaguar Mk VII and various Ferraris and Rolls-Royces, among the others, but his favorite was always the McLaren F1. Now, after 18 years and 41,000 miles on the clock, Atkinson decided that it is time for this exotic vehicle to be enjoyed by someone else.
1998 McLaren F1 Engine and Performance
The supercar is powered by a rear-mounted 6.1-liter V-12 engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, that can deliver 627 horsepower (468 kW) and 480 pound-feet (651 Nm) of torque. It allows the car to reach the top speed of 241 miles per hour, while the 0-60 mph time is rated at 3.2 seconds. It was the fastest vehicle in the world for more than 10 years. Fun fact: The engine bay is lined with gold foil, as you can see in the photo below, because it is the best heat-conductor. When it comes to the fuel economy, it is rated at 15 miles per gallon.
Exterior and Interior Design
The McLaren F1 is a lightweight supercar, made of carbon fiber materials. Titanium and gold are also used. Atkinson said that he like this vehicle because it is as light as a shopping car, and has enough space for three passengers (one driver seat in the center, and two passenger seats behind it) and all your luggage. Although it’s a fast three-seater, he said it is a perfect vehicle to go on vacation and around the city, and he enjoys driving it slowly. Of course, he did go to a track for a 200-mph drive. Inside, it has a CD player, but no radio, because back then automaker wanted to decrease the weight as much as possible.
Atkinson did crash it two times, but he wasn’t seriously injured. The last time he almost destroyed the car completely when he smashed it into a tree, and it took £910,000 (about $1.4 million) and one year to repair it. This car has the interesting history. But now, everything has been fixed and the car is as perfect as it was when it went on sale 18 years ago.
Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1 Price
British actor bought his 1998 McLaren F1 supercar for £540,000, which is about $813,000 at the current exchange rates. I don’t know what the exchange rate was back in 1997. Anyway, after all these years he decided to sell his vehicle for the price of £8 million, which is equal to $12 million. If you decide to buy it, contact the London dealer Taylor & Crawley, and you will be one of 107 owners.
