The Camaro ZL1 is the powerful version of the popular muscle car which has been around for ages. However, not too long ago GM launched their 6th-generation model, which was available at launch with the base three engines and nothing more. However, the lineup is not going to die because the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has been announced and despite the fact that there isn’t that much information available about the car, it seems that it is going to be a lot more fun than the previous version. This is because it now sits on an all new chassis, the Alpha, which also underpins one of the best driving cars in the World, the new Cadillac ATS.
ZL1 Changes, Release Date, Price
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is going to share most of its components with the usual Camaro, but Chevrolet is going to work on it in order to make it better in pretty much every way. Firstly, the running gear is likely going to be changed completely from the base car with new suspension arms, shock absorbers as well as springs, all needed for the higher rated power of the car. The brakes won’t remain unchanged either, it is expected to receive high performance Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers at the back. The debut date is likely going to be some time at the end of 2016, while the car should be ready for sale for the mid of 2017, most likely in the summer. Its price will likely be higher than that of the current model and most people expect it to cost similarly to a Hellcat model, so roughly between $60,000 and $70,000. These are just speculations.
2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Specs, Engine
Unfortunately we don’t have any real information about what type of engine the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is going to receive but considering the previous generation and that it has to face stiffer competition, it is quite likely that it will get the same 6.2L V-8 engine from the Corvette and get a roots-type supercharger that should allow it to get at least 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. GM also announced that this generation of the Camaro, thanks to the lower weight, should be quite good in terms of performance so the 0-to-60 mph time will likely be less than 3.5 seconds and it maximum top speed should be north of 200 miles per hour. The transmission used for this engine is currently not known, but it is quite possible for the coupe to receive the same 8-speed gearbox also found in the CTS-V. Rumors also suggested that the engine might in fact be a smaller turbocharged V-8, but currently GM hasn’t any type of smaller V-8s in its roster.
Exterior and Interior Design
On the exterior, the ZL1 should be quite similar to the usual new model, so in terms of size should be quite similar. However, the car is likely going to sit on bigger 20-inch light alloy wheels coupled with high performance tires while the body-kit is going to be completely different in order to give it more downforce. The front end could make use of a splitter, while at the back it will most likely get a subtle wing needed for its maximum top speed. At the rear, unlike the usual Camaro, the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will get different tail lights, an all new exhaust system with butterfly valves that will make it sound raw and untamed. The inside of the car on the other hand is going to be a completely different story because the coupe will still have to be a perfectly comfortable car good for day to day use. In order to achieve that, it will share its interior with the base model with the exception of its steering wheel and carbon fiber accents.
