Because of the not so good sales, the 2017 Hyundai Sonata is planned to be launched in the summer of 2016. It will feature a revised interior and new engine options. The current model was introduced last year in New York, but its slow sales caused Hyundai to plan on adding a few features on the car with the 2017 model, features which are meant to make the 2017 Sonata sedan the best car in its class.
At the moment though, it is very good but not perfect, it misses a few points such as a more refined engine or high-end luxury version. All of these don’t matter as much though if you are a person only looking for one of the best family cars out there because the Sonata is one of those cars, offering good ride quality, better than average handling, good and powerful engines as well as one of the better equipped interiors in its class.
Engine, Specs, Fuel Economy
Engine wise, it will still use the same powertrains as the current generation — a naturally aspirated 2.4L engine good for people looking for a cheap to run car and not much more; a 1.6L turbocharged I-4 only available on the Eco model which does 38 MPG and it is one of the better engines in its class; a 2.0L turbocharged engine good for people looking for a faster version of the car without compromising too much the fuel efficiency. All of these are great, but the news will come in a new hybrid version. While it is currently available with a 2-liter Atkinson cycle engine coupled to an electric motor, the 2017 Hyundai Sonata will also be available with a smaller petrol engine coupled to an electric motor and a set of batteries. This model won’t be able to make over 120 horsepower, but it will provide more than 55 MPG.
Exterior Design, Changes
How is Hyundai planning on doing that? Well, not too long ago a prototype of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata has been spied testing and the result is a bit more unusual than most people think. In fact it seems that Hyundai wants to build a Sonata similar to a Toyota Prius, so expect a wedge shaped car in order to decrease its drag coefficient and make it more fuel efficient, tiny wheels, a similar front end to the current model but likely a different grille and bumper that will allow it to achieve that fuel consumption. The usual model on the other hand should come unchanged over the 2015 model with the exception of a few wheel options.
New Interior Styling
The interior of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata on the other hand is likely going to be completely revised. We will see a change in terms of equipment. While the current sedan is very new its technology is a bit outdated, especially when it comes to the infotainment system which on the base model is nothing more than a radio with a small LCD screen. This is likely going to be upgraded to a 7-inch touch screen that will get rid of all the many buttons on the dashboard which ruin the clean look of the car.
2017 Hyundai Sonata Release Date, Price
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata is going to be released some time in the 3rd quarter of 2016, while the hybrid model is expected to go on sale this year. Changes over the current model are going to include slight tweaks of the exterior, a more refined interior, as well as a new engine option. The base price will remain the same at $21,000 which is a great price for such a car, but the price for its higher end version is going to increase quite a bit more over the current $30,000. In fact, we expect that the upcoming sedan will cost around $35,000 for its new trim (hybrid), but more on that later.
