Both Renault and Nissan have quite a few common models which use the same basic platform, but look different in order to sell them in their respective markets. However, Renault never really had a C-Segment car or how we usually call them, a medium-size crossover. Well, not until now because they are going to introduce on the market the 2016 Renault Kadjar, a car based on the Nissan Qashqai, which is going to have quite a few common parts with the Japanese model.
Specs, Engine, Performance
Just like the car it will be based on, the 2016 Renault Kadjar is going to be available either with front-wheel drive in which case a CVT gearbox should be available, or with AWD in which case it will inherit the four-wheel drive system Nissan developed for their car. This will also get a 6-speed manual gearbox which is going to be a treat for a lot of people. The only drawback here is the 190 mm ground clearance that it is great for unpaved roads, but not so good for any kind of off-road driving. This is gonna be alleviated by the big approach and departure angles of roughly 20 degrees.
Engine wise, the 2016 Renault Kadjar will come with the same engines as the Qashqai. The base model will come in Europe with a 1.2-liter turbo Inline-4 which is good for 128 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. This is only going to be available with a 6-speed manual and FWD. The other two choices include an 128-hp 1.6L diesel engine, as well as an 108-hp 1.5L diesel. Both of these will cost roughly the same, but the petrol engine is going to be the higher performance version. The diesel on the other hand will get over 74.3 MPG of combined fuel efficiency, even with the all-wheel drive system which is certainly a record. After its initial release we expect that the SUV will also get a more powerful diesel for certain markets, which is surely going to sell very well.
Exterior and Interior Design
The exterior of the 2016 Renault Kadjar is going to be similar in proportions to the Qashqai, but most of the design elements are going to be different. The front end will look a lot like the Captur, while at the back it will share the shape of the taillights with the latest generation of the Clio. So yeah, it borrowed many elements from other Renault and Nissan vehicles, but that is not a bad thing.
Inside the Kadjar things are going to be quite familiar mainly because there are going to be design elements both from the Clio as well as from the Captur. However, the base equipment level is going to be quite high, with an included 7-inch touch display which offers GPS navigation, Bluetooth, USB input or even Internet connectivity. The A/C system is going to be automatic, while the front seats are going to be electric and have the option to be heated during cold weather. The leather upholstery on the other hand is going to be available as an option and so it’s gonna be the panoramic roof.
2016 Renault Kadjar Release Date, Est. Price
At this point in time, the model was actually only proposed for production but considering Renault doesn’t have such a model and they were looking for one for quite some time, it is only natural that it will come on the market by the end of this year or in some point of 2016. The base price is unknown but considering the Nissan platform, we expect it to be quite affordable in order to sell well. In fact, we think that the 2016 Renault Kadjar is going to come at a base price lower than 20,000 euros or roughly 24,000 dollars, price which would put it with smaller cars in certain markets such as Europe or even Russia. It will also be offered in the Chinese market.
