Besides having a boxy frame, the 2016 Ford Explorer is now a luxurious three-row passenger SUV, moving away from its truck-based roots and bringing certain changes. The vehicle gets a significant refresh that outlines advanced feature sets such as quieter interiors and smoother bodywork. It is lighter, more powerful and possesses better fuel efficiency.
The rear fascias and the front of the new 2016 Ford Explorer went through certain changes, while the its angular shape all-over is to remain intact. The major changes on this SUV are on the front grille, and the headlights are now placed higher on front fascia. The integrated LED signature lightning, available LED fog-lights and LED low beams make the new 7-passenger SUV’s headlights more robust. Additionally, the vehicle has ten exterior colors, and these include Guard, Caribou, Magnetic, Bronze Fire Metallic, Ruby Red Metallic, White Platinum Metallic, Absolute Black, Oxford White, Blue Jeans, and Silver Ingot.
Although some design changes will have to take place, the 2016 Ford Explorer will be mainly carried over material-wise as far as the interior design is concerned. For instance, although both the leather-trimmed seating surfaces and the cloth will be maintained, one or two-tone cabin having metallic accents will be featured to make the vehicle look as good as ever. Dashboard, on the other hand, might keep its layout and the instrument panel will be holding a touch screen display that might be advanced from the normal 4.2-incher to something more stunning and bigger. A 10-inch digital instrument table and Sony audio system are going to be included. Depending on a trim level, as well as other select features, the climate control spans will range from the manual single zone to dual zone automatic.
Engine, Fuel Consumption
The base 2016 Ford Explorer, Limited and XLT models are all powered with a Ti-VCT V-6 engine, which has a capacity of 3.5 liters and produces 255 lb-ft of torque and a total of 290 horsepower. A 6-speed Select-Shift automatic gearbox is paired with this engine for greater performance. The automaker has wholly re-tuned the chassis of the SUV, thus allowing more variance between the trim levels. A 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine is the optional engine for all trim levels. This power unit delivers a minimum of 270 horses and 300 pound-feet of twist. The Sport and Platinum trims are going to receive a 365-hp 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 delivering a torque of 350 pound-feet.
Ford states that the engine delivers more power, therefore, we have high expectations as far as better fuel efficiency is concerned. The base V-6 should meet an increase in the efficiency of fuel, courtesy of the vehicle’s lighter aluminum body. There is also a possibility of being rated 22 mpg when combined with FWD or 21mpg when combined with 4WD rather than 20 and 19mpg combined with FWD and 4WD respectively. According to Ford, the 2016 Explorer’s class-leading fuel economy numbers, which range up to 28mpg on the highway when using the current 2.0-liter, will remain intact.
