Ferrari is probably the best known car manufacturer in the world, known not only for their racing cars but also for their road cars which are direct derivatives of the racing models. This helped them become what they are today. Their most successful models have always been the supercars rather than the Enzo-like hyper cars, so the F430 or the 458 managed not only to sell well but also to impress a lot of people with their road behavior. The direct descendant of the 458 Italia is going to be the 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB, a reference to the first 308 GTB model. This is going to be a massive upgrade over the earlier car, coming with a new engine, as well as a lot of new electronics.
As you would expect though, the chassis remained similar, so it will still be a carbon fiber tube that will be wrapped in a carbon fiber body. This allowed Ferrari to keep the total weight of the 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB at only 3020 pounds which is 25 pounds less than the ongoing 458, a really nice surprise considering how the industry is doing lately. However, it won’t have a 50/50 weight distribution, but rather a 47.5/52.5 distribution which is still fine if the downforce helps it. Luckily, it does thanks to the active aerodynamic elements which are now standard on most of the company’s cars. Both the rear diffuser as well as the front splitter feature closing flaps, which allow it to have a 50% better downforce than the 458 while keeping the drag coefficient lower than it too.
Turbo Engine, Specs, Performance
Under the back engine cover there is going to be the biggest surprise about the 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB. The old aspirated V-8 is going to be replaced with a smaller 3.9L twin-turbo V8 which is going to provide 661 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. As you would expect from a turbocharged engine, the red-line has been lowered to 8000 rpm from 9000, while the full amount of torque is available from as low as 3000 rpm which is impressing for a Ferrari. However, considering most of its competitors are offering at least the same amount of power, it remains to be seen how well it is going to perform. While the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time is quite similar to the older model at just 3 seconds, the top speed is greater at 205 miles per hour (330 km/h). The 0 to 124 mph also drops by around 1.3 seconds which is a massive improvement! The only drawback of the turbocharged engine is most likely going to be the noise it makes.
Interior and Exterior Design
On the interior things are going to be kept to a bare minimum in order to keep the driving experience pure. Most of the functions from the dashboard moved to the multifunctional steering wheel, while the satellite navigation screen is now incorporated into the instrument cluster in order to be available at any given moment. The seats were also improved now offering a nicer cushion that uses memory foam and a lot more lateral support which is going to help on the track for sure. The overall interior of the 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB looks both sporty and luxurious.
The outside of the 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB on the other hand won’t change as much as you would think. It will be more of a facelift than anything else, painted in the new Rosso Corsa Metallizzato color. The back of the coupe will get a new set of taillights, big air vents, as well as a retractable wing and the same exhaust system as the 458 Speciale. In the front it will receive a Formula1-inspired air intake system and splitter, giving it a really distinctive look.
2016 Ferrari 488 GTB Release Date, Price
When it comes to a release date, the coupe is expected to be launched in the retail stores by the end of this year. It was first presented at the Auto Show in Geneva this January. The estimated price is most likely going to be under $300,000. Exact pricing will be announced later.
