Several design sketches of the 2016 BMW i9 Plug-In Hybrid emerged online. It will be a successor to the i8. We also have some details regarding this hybrid supercar. Here’s what we know so far.
Hybrid Engine & Electric Motor
If reports are true, the upcoming 2016 BMW i9 is going to be powered by a combination of a petrol engine and an electric motor, making it a hybrid vehicle. This hybrid system include a 3.0L six-cylinder engine, that together with a motor and a 6-speed automatic transmission will be able to generate more than 500 “horses” and 550 pound-feet of twist. Some rumors claim that the new i9 will actually be a Plug-In Hybrid model, just like its predecessor i8.
BMW i9 PHEV Design
As you can see in the photos posted here, the upcoming 2016 BMW i9 Hybrid will be similar to the both 9 Series GT Concept and 2015 BMW i8. However, it will have a longer hood, making it a little more aggressive. These are just sketches and concepts; the final model can be much different. At the end of this article, you can see a very good rendering photo, showing one of the car’s possible designs. The word is that the German manufacturer will use a combination of carbon-fiber and aluminum materials for the i9’s body, to make it lighter, thus increasing its performance. Total weight will be distributed in a 50:50 ratio.
2016 BMW i9 Release Date & Price
According to the manufacturer itself, they want to release the new 2016 BMW i9 PHEV on their 100th birthday. So, expect its release date to be sometime after March 2016. This supercar will also come in limited numbers, thus its price will be very high. Expect a starting price of the new i9 hybrid to be more than $175,000.
