2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-in Hybrid Design
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-in Hybrid is not much different when compared to the other models in S-Class. It has a familiar look, quite similar to the S500 sedan. If there is no charging port above the rear bumper, you would not be able to tell the difference between this sedan and similar models. Check out the photos. You will notice the elegant body of the S550, its large front grille and aggressive headlights with LED daylight running lamps. Its roof swoops down all the way back to the trunk. The taillights, which are quite big, are also designed very elegantly. Below the right taillight, you can notice the charging-port door. Two flat exhaust tips protrude below the bumper.
Interior Design and Equipment
Inside, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-in Hybrid is very spacious and very comfortable. Even the taller passengers will be able to enjoy the ride. The whole cabin is covered in premium and soft-touch materials. The leather-wrapped seats come with heating and cooling options. And that’s not all, even the steering wheel and armrests can be heated during the cold days. And automatic A/C is also included. Behind the steering wheel, there is one 12.3-inch high-res display with digital speedometer and tachometer, that replaces the standard instrument cluster. It also shows which driving mode is currently used, and there are several modes to choose from: Hybrid, E-Mode, E-Save, and Charge. The second 12.3-inch screen is positioned in the center of the dashboard, it is part of an infotainment system. You can use it to access the internet, connect with smartphones and tablets, activate audio system, use GPS navigation, etc.
Engine, Performance, Fuel Economy
Under the hood of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Plug-in Hybrid we can find a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 petrol engine able to deliver 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, and a 85-kW electric motor producing additional 114 horses and 251 lb-ft of twist. This two units can generate a total of 436 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The system is powered by a 8.7-kWh Li-ion battery. All the power is sent to the rear axle via a 7-speed automatic transmission, but it also supports the manual shifting mode. This PHEV can travel up to 20 miles on electric power alone with a maximum speed of 87 mph. With gasoline engine, its top speed is 130 mph, and it can sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in about 5 seconds. However, some sources claim that in Europe the car’s top speed won’t be limited and it will be able to travel with the max speed of 155 mph. In Europe, the S550 PHEV consumes 2.8 liters per 100 kilometers. That’s about 84 mpg of fuel economy rating in the United States, but this number might be lower after EPA testing. Experts predict that it will most likely be EPA rated at 26 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. The car releases 65 grams of CO2 gases per kilometer.
