The 2015 Mazda 2 is going to be a fully reworked super-mini, offering a stylish new design, performance upgrades and new technology. Lucky for its buyers is that it won’t share any parts with the previous generation but rather with the Mazda3, meaning that the quality of it went up. The previous Mazda2 was quite a nice car which not only offered good engines but also a nice interior and exterior shell. However, it lost the competition to a few other American and European hatchbacks mostly due to its design which wasn’t liked by many people. That’s why the Japanese automaker decided to improve it.
Engine, Specs, Performance
Unlike the previous model, the new 2015 Mazda 2 will be one of the first models which is going to offer a fully SKYACTIV-D package, meaning that the body, chassis, suspension and its engines have been tuned to work perfectly in sync. This would make it one of the better cars in its class but this remains to be seen.
The base 2015 Mazda 2 model will be offered with a 1.5L SKYACTIV-D Inline-4 gasoline engine which should provide 74 horsepower. With the 5-speed manual transmission it should return 60.1 miles per gallon. Next in lineup is another 1.5L unit, but this time delivering 89 horsepower and 62.8 mpg of fuel economy. It also offers lower emissions, just 105 g/km. The most powerful petrol unit is a 113-hp engine rated at 57.6 mpg and emitting 115 g/km of CO2 gases. The last two units are also mated to a five-speed manual. Diesel variant include a 1.5-liter four-banger which can deliver 103 horsepower. It returns 83.1 mpg and emits 89 g/km of CO2. As far as the performance goes, all models will be quite close with a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 10 seconds and a top speed of around 112 mph.
Interior and Exterior Redesign
Its interior will also receive a massive update over the previous car. Everything is going to be a lot simpler in order to offer the best possible driving experience for a super mini. The dashboard is going to be wrapped in leather or soft touch materials, depending on the model of choice while the instrument cluster will offer three screens which are going to show different information about the car. The navigation system is going to be a tablet-like device which can be removed or upgraded by the end buyer which is a really nice touch for such a cheap car. The space inside the cabin also increased together with the exterior dimensions.
The outside of the 2015 Mazda 2 Demio is probably the most striking change of them all. Inspired by the new KODO design language, it now looks a lot more similar to the new 6 or 3 rather than the older model which is always nice. Its general shape changed from that of a normal hatchback to a coupe-inspired shape with an arched roof that gives it that aggressive look. The front grille integrates part of the headlights for an uninterrupted design while at the back there is a set of LED tail lights with a really clean hatch door.
2015 Mazda 2 Release Date, Price
The hatchback already went on sale in Japan. The release date for other markets has been announced for the mid of 2015. The price tag will start at £11,995 (which is about $18,440 at the current rates), and will go up to £17,395 (~$26,740). Price depends on a trim level, engine options and additional accessories.
